On Irony in Catch-22

Abstract

Catch-22 is an ironic, fictional novel by the American novelist,Joseph Heller.It was first published in 1961. After publication, it became a classic masterpiece in American literature history. It employs irony profoundly. This thesis tries to discuss the effect of irony on performing themes and reflecting values of the novel. Firstly, this thesis discusses irony used to portray the characters, such as Yossarian’s helplessness and desperation, Lieutenant Scheisskopf’s foolishness, Milo’s greed and hypocrisy. Then through the use of irony, this thesis discusses how the author exposes the themes of the novel. In the third part, this thesis tries to analyze the use of irony in the organization of the plots and language.

摘 要

《第2102條軍規》是約瑟夫•海勒1961年發(fā)表的他的第1部作品。出版后成為當代美國文學(xué)的經(jīng)典作品之1。小說(shuō)巧妙的運用了反諷手法。本文探討反諷手法的運用在表現主題和體現作品藝術(shù)價(jià)值方面所起的作用。本文的第1部分將討論小說(shuō)如何運用反諷刻畫(huà)人物．比如約瑟連的無(wú)奈和絕望沙伊斯科普夫的愚蠢，米羅的貪婪和愚蠢。第2部分分析作者如何通過(guò)反諷的運用來(lái)揭示戰爭的荒謬和人性的扭曲主題。第3部分則討論作者如何運用反諷精心構筑情節和達到黑色幽默的效果。
