Jane : What’s Ron Marston like , Pauline ?
簡(jiǎn)：羅恩.馬斯頓是怎樣一個(gè)人?
Pauline : He’s awful ! He telephoned me four times yesterday , and three times the day before yesterday.
波淋：他討厭透了!他昨天給我打了4次電話(huà)前天打了3次。
Pauline: He telephoned the office yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon. My boss answered the telephone .
波淋：他昨天上午和下午把電話(huà)打到了我的辦公室，是我的老板接的。
Jane : What did your boss say to him ?
簡(jiǎn)：你老板是怎么對他說(shuō)的?
Pauline: He said ,”Pauline is typing letters .She can’t speak to you now !”
波淋：他說(shuō)：“波淋正在打信，她現在不能同你講話(huà)!”
Pauline : Then I arrived home at six o’clock yesterday evening .He telephoned again .But I didn’t answer the phone !
波淋：后來(lái)，我昨晚6點(diǎn)鐘回到家里。他又打來(lái)電話(huà)，但我沒(méi)接。
Jane : Did he telephone again last night ?
簡(jiǎn)：他昨夜里又打電話(huà)了嗎?
Pauline : Yes , he did . He telephoned at nine o’clock .

Jane : What did you say to him ?

Pauline : I said ,”This is Pauline ‘s mother . Please don’t telephone my daughter again !”

1 He telephoned me four times yesterday.他昨天給我打了4次電話(huà)。“是”動(dòng)詞以外的動(dòng)詞在過(guò)去時(shí)中一般有兩種形式。規則動(dòng)詞一般是在動(dòng)詞后面加-ed，如answer/answered; 以-e結尾的規則動(dòng)詞加-d.如telephone/telephoned, arrive/arrived。另一部分動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去式拼寫(xiě)不規則，因此稱(chēng)為不規則動(dòng)詞，如：say/said, do/did。從本課開(kāi)始，單詞表中的不規則動(dòng)詞除列出原形外，還將在括弧中列出過(guò)去式的拼‘寫(xiě)和讀一音。
2 一般過(guò)去時(shí)的句子中常常有表示過(guò)去某一時(shí)刻的時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)，如本課中的yesterday〔昨天)，the day before yesterday(前天)，yesterday morning(昨天上午)，yesterday afternoon(昨天下午)。yesterday evening(昨天晚上)，last night(昨夜)。

1.What's Ron Marston like, Pauline? 波琳，朗·馬斯頓是怎樣一個(gè)人?
What is sb. like? 這一句式可用來(lái)詢(xún)問(wèn)某人的外貌或品行。就本課的具體情況而言，波琳的回答更多地是指馬斯頓的品行如何。
2.He telephoned me four times yesterday…他昨天給我打了4次電話(huà)……
four times, 4次。 time在英語(yǔ)中作不可數名詞時(shí)表示"時(shí)間";作可數名詞時(shí)表示"次數"。請注意英語(yǔ)中次數的表示法：
once 1次
twice 2次
three times 3次
3次或 3次以上通常都用基數詞+ times表示：
five times 5次
thirty times 30次
3. the day before yesterday, 前天。
4.answer the telephone, 接電話(huà)。
口語(yǔ)中也常用 answer the phone。類(lèi)似的.短語(yǔ)如：
answer the door/doorbell應聲開(kāi)門(mén)

speak to sb. 意為"與某人說(shuō)話(huà)"。例如打電話(huà)時(shí)可以說(shuō)：
May I speak to Pauline, please?
請讓波琳接電話(huà)好嗎?
I' d like to speak to Pauline, please.
我想請波琳聽(tīng)電話(huà)。
6.This is Pauline's mother. 我是波琳的母親。
This is…是英美人打電話(huà)時(shí)表示"我是……"的句式，而不說(shuō)I'm…。
相關(guān)的電話(huà)用語(yǔ)如：

一般過(guò)去時(shí)(2)
