　　The Kingdom of the Lion獅子國王

　　THE BEASTS of the field and forest had a Lion as their king. He was neither wrathful, cruel, nor tyrannical, but just and gentle as a king could be. During his reign he made a royal proclamation for a general

　　assembly of all the birds and beasts, and drew up conditions for a universal league, in which the Wolf and the Lamb, the Panther and the Kid, the Tiger and the Stag, the Dog and the Hare, should live together in

　　perfect peace and amity. The Hare said, "Oh, how I have longed to see this day, in which the weak shall take their place with impunity by the side of the strong." And after the Hare said this, he ran for his life.

　　有只獅子做了國王，他善良、溫和，與人一樣和平、公正。在他的統治下，懲惡揚善， 裁決動(dòng)物之間的糾紛，使所有的動(dòng)物和睦相處。膽小的兔子說(shuō)：“我祈禱能得到這樣的日 子，那時(shí)弱者就不怕被強者傷害了。” 然后趕緊逃命去了。

　　《公雞和寶玉》

　　A COCK, scratching for food for himself and his hens, found a precious stone and exclaimed: "If your owner had found thee, and not I, he would have taken thee up, and have set thee in thy first estate; but I have found

　　thee for no purpose. I would rather have one barleycorn than all the jewels in the world."

　　一只公雞在田野里為自己和母雞們尋找食物。他發(fā)現了一塊寶玉，便對寶玉說(shuō)：“若不 是我，而是你的主人找到了你，他會(huì )非常珍惜地把你撿起來(lái);但我發(fā)現了你卻毫無(wú)用處。我 與其得到世界上一切寶玉，倒不如得到一顆

　　《老人與死神》

　　An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.

　　At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down all the sticks and cried out, "I cannot bear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"

　　As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."

　　"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to my shoulder?"

　　譯文

　　老人與死神

　　有個(gè)老人在森林中砍了不少柴，十分吃力地挑著(zhù)走了很遠的路。

　　一路上他累極了，實(shí)在挑不動(dòng)了，便扔下柴擔，叫喊起來(lái)：“這種日子我受不了了，死神啊，帶我走吧。”

　　這時(shí)，死神來(lái)了，對他說(shuō)：“老頭，你想做什么，我聽(tīng)見(jiàn)你叫我?”

　　“先生”，老人說(shuō)，“您能幫忙將那擔子放在我的肩上嗎?”

　　寓意

　　即使生活不幸，人們仍需愛(ài)惜生命。

　　《烏鴉喝水》

　　A crow, ready to die with thirst, flew with joy to a pitcher which he saw at a distance. But when he came up to it, he found the water so low that with all his stooping and straining he was unable to reach it. Thereupon he tried to bread the pitcher, then to overturn it, seeing some small pebbles at hand, he dropped a great many of them, one by one, into the pitcher, and so raised the water to the brim, and quenched his thirst.

　　譯 文

　　一只快渴死的烏鴉，遠遠地看見(jiàn)一只水壺，就高興地飛了過(guò)去，但是當他飛到的`時(shí)候發(fā)現壺里的水淺得怎么用力彎腰伸頸也夠不著(zhù)，于是他試著(zhù)把水壺打破，又試著(zhù)把他推倒。但是力量不足，都做不到，最后看見(jiàn)近邊有許多小石子，他一個(gè)個(gè)地把很多石子丟進(jìn)了水壺，這樣使水上升到壺口，就解了渴。

　　寓 意

　　遇到困難的時(shí)候動(dòng)腦筋。
