An Ode
The merchant, to secure his treasure,
Conveys it in a borrowed name.
Euphelia serves to grace my measure;
But Chloe is my real flame.
My softest verse, my darling lyre,
Upon Euphelia’s toilet lay;
When Chloe noted her desire,
That I should sing, that I should play.
My lyre I tune, my voice I raise;
But with my numbers mix my sighs：
And whilst I sing Euphelia’s praise,
I fix my soul on Chloe’s eyes.
Fair Chloe blushed: Euphelia frowned：
I sung and gazed: I played and trembled：
And Venus to the Loves around
Remarked, how ill we all dissembled.

為了安全運送財寶，
商人總把外表偽裝;
克蘿點(diǎn)燃我愛(ài)情的火焰，
我卻對尤菲莉亞裝模作樣。
我纏綿的詩(shī)，心愛(ài)的琴，
在尤菲莉亞的梳妝臺前擺放;
克蘿此時(shí)提出意愿，
要我當面撫琴歌唱。
我把歌喉放開(kāi)，
我把豎琴奏響;
無(wú)奈歌聲隱隱拌著(zhù)嘆息，
難忍琴曲深深含著(zhù)憂(yōu)傷。
我坦白自己口是心非，
我承認自己氣短情長(cháng);
口里唱著(zhù)尤菲莉亞的頌歌，
一顆心卻系在克蘿的身上。
尤菲莉亞雙眉緊鎖,
美麗的克蘿滿(mǎn)面春光;
我一邊彈奏一邊發(fā)抖，
我一邊歌唱一邊凝望。
維納斯走到我們身邊，
囑咐周?chē)男?ài)神不必空忙;
說(shuō)是真心摯愛(ài)總是弄巧成拙，
說(shuō)是虛情假意終歸欲蓋彌彰。
馬修普賴(lài)爾(Matthew Prior1664—1721)英國詩(shī)人 在兩位親密交往的女子中間只能選擇一個(gè)。詩(shī)人把其中一位作為掩護,把真正的選擇隱藏起來(lái)。然而愛(ài)是無(wú)法隱藏的,終歸要露出蛛絲馬跡,有時(shí)竟會(huì )弄巧成拙,欲蓋彌彰。
