方言
英語(yǔ)是一種多中心語(yǔ)言。由于英語(yǔ)的使用范圍極為廣泛，不可避免地出現了各種地區性變體。語(yǔ)言學(xué)家已經(jīng)不再把倫敦或英國上層人士的英語(yǔ)作為唯一的標準英語(yǔ)。除英國英語(yǔ)外，最重大的是北美英語(yǔ)和澳新英語(yǔ)。自從17、18世紀，美國英語(yǔ)、加拿大英語(yǔ)、澳大利亞英語(yǔ)、新西蘭英語(yǔ)開(kāi)始成為獨特的方言。它們也各有自己的地區性的語(yǔ)詞、語(yǔ)法和語(yǔ)音。其他像印度英語(yǔ)、東南亞英語(yǔ)、加勒比地區英語(yǔ)和非洲某些新興國家的英語(yǔ)，都各自受到了當地語(yǔ)言影響、具有語(yǔ)音和詞匯上的特點(diǎn)。
英語(yǔ)的主要方言在語(yǔ)音上有著(zhù)相當明顯的差別，拼寫(xiě)的差別則較小。一般人們以一些學(xué)術(shù)機構的辭書(shū)作為標準的英語(yǔ)，例如《牛津英語(yǔ)詞典》等。在學(xué)術(shù)、科技文章方面，來(lái)自各國作者使用的是一種共同文體。第二次世界大戰以前，“美式英語(yǔ)”這個(gè)術(shù)語(yǔ)通常被理解為美國人特有的語(yǔ)詞和語(yǔ)法，在當時(shí)的一些“純潔主義”的英國文人看來(lái)，它不是純正的英文，但到了第二次世界大戰前后，“美式英語(yǔ)”一詞的概念逐漸變了，只指在美國本土上使用的英語(yǔ)，而不論其與英國英語(yǔ)的異同。在第二次世界大戰以后，由于美國的大眾傳播媒介迅速發(fā)展，美國英語(yǔ)已反過(guò)來(lái)對其他方言產(chǎn)生影響，并且正在日益擴大這種影響。

The pig & Watermelon
In spring, the mother pig took the little pig LuLu to the foot of the mountain. They planted some watermelon.
When summer came, there were many big round watermelons in the field.
One day, the sun was burning like a fire, it was terribly hot on the ground. The mother pig said to the little pig:"Lulu, go to the field to pick a watermelon back,ok?" Lulu said happily:"Ok! No problem."
Then he ran to the watermelon field. When he got to the field, he was happy to find so many big green watermelons. He chose one of the biggest watermelon and picked it from the vine. Then he held it with his hands trying to lift is on his shoulder to carry it home.
"Wow!It's so heavy!" Lulu tried several times, but he failed. And he was socked with sweat. He wiped his sweat off and decided to have a rest.
Suddenly he saw the monkey Pipi. He was playing with a hoop. Lulu patted his head and said:"I've got it." He thought,the round hoop can roll, the watermelon round too,then it can roll too.He then put the big melon on the ground and rolled it forward quickly.
At last he got home with the watermelon.The mother pig knew the story, she exclaimed:"My child, you're really clever!"
小豬搬西瓜
春天的時(shí)候，豬媽媽帶著(zhù)小豬嚕嚕，在山坡下種了一大片西瓜。到了夏天，西瓜地里結滿(mǎn)了又圓又大的西瓜。
有一天，太陽(yáng)光火辣辣地照著(zhù)大地，天啊，可熱了。豬媽媽對小豬說(shuō)：“嚕嚕，你到咱們的地里摘個(gè)大西瓜回來(lái)解解渴吧!”小豬嚕嚕高興地說(shuō)：“好吧!”說(shuō)完就往西瓜地里跑。到了地里一看。呵，到處躺著(zhù)大西瓜，水靈靈的，真惹人喜愛(ài)!嚕嚕挑了個(gè)最大的摘了下來(lái)。它雙手摟著(zhù)西瓜，想抱起來(lái)放在肩上扛回家。“喲，好重呀!”嚕嚕試著(zhù)抱了幾次都沒(méi)有抱起來(lái)，還累得滿(mǎn)頭大汗。 它直起身來(lái)，擦了擦臉上的汗水想休息一下，再去試試抱西瓜。突然，它看到小猴皮皮在山下邊的馬路上滾鐵環(huán)玩呢。小豬嚕嚕一拍后腦勺高興地說(shuō)：“有了，我有辦法了。”什么辦法呢?小豬嚕嚕心想：鐵環(huán)是圓的，可以滾動(dòng)。西瓜也是圓的，不也可以滾動(dòng)嗎?想到這兒啊，小豬嚕嚕顧不上休息，把大西瓜放在地上。咕嚕嚕，咕嚕嚕地向前滾，一直把西瓜滾到家里。
豬媽媽看到小豬嚕嚕把又圓又大的西瓜搬回家，夸獎嚕嚕是個(gè)愛(ài)動(dòng)腦筋的豬娃娃!
