The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or "Christs Mass". Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. Most historians peg the first celebration of Christmas to Rome in 336 AD.
Christmas is both a holiday and a Holy Day. In America it is the biggest event of the year (especially for kids), and for members of the Christian religions it is an important day on the religious calendar. The federal government, all state governments, all schools/colleges/universities and the vast majority of businesses in America give employees one or two days off at Christmas, making it an important holiday (other federal holidays are: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Washingtons Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving). In the Roman Catholic calendar, Christmas is one of 6 holy feast days celebrated in America, the others being: Circumcision (New Years Day), Ascension, Assumption (Marys Assumption into heaven, August 15), All Saints (November 2), and the Immaculate Conception (December 8).

Christmas Eve：平安夜，也就是圣誕節的前一天。每年的12月24日。這跟我們的`大年夜有點(diǎn)相似(New Years Eve)。
Christmas Day：圣誕節當天，每年的12月25日。相當于中國的大年初一。Everybody goes for various parties to celebrate the festival on Christmas day.(在圣誕節那天，大家都去參加各種各樣的派對來(lái)慶祝節日。)
Boxing Day：圣誕節后的第一個(gè)工作日，即每年的12月26日，意即“重拳出擊的那一天”。
尤其值得注意的是，在西方，還有一個(gè)Christmas season。它是指12月24日至翌年1月6日，我們稱(chēng)之為“圣誕節節期”。也就是經(jīng)常說(shuō)的holiday season，指的是一整段日子。
Christmas gift或者Christmas present：這兩個(gè)詞都可以表示圣誕禮物。我們經(jīng)常會(huì )說(shuō)：Here is a Christmas gift for you. 或者：I have a present for your Christmas Day.即表示要送對方圣誕禮物的意思。
Santa Claus：圣誕老人。他趕著(zhù)馴鹿，拉著(zhù)裝滿(mǎn)禮物的雪橇挨家挨戶(hù)給每個(gè)孩子送禮物的形象已深深地留在人們的記憶中。
Bethlehem：伯利恒。耶路撒冷南方六英里一市鎮，傳說(shuō)為耶穌誕生地。
Christmas tree：圣誕樹(shù)。與之相關(guān)的還有Christmas decorations(圣誕裝飾物);Christmas wreath或者Christmas garland(圣誕花環(huán));Christmas crafts(圣誕工藝品)。這些美麗的裝點(diǎn)都使得圣誕節變得熠熠生輝。
Christmas Waits：報佳音的人。圣誕夜指12月24日晚至25日晨。教會(huì )組織一些圣詩(shī)班(或由信徒自發(fā)地組成)挨門(mén)挨戶(hù)地在門(mén)口或窗下唱圣誕頌歌，叫作“報佳音”，意思是再現當年天使向伯利恒郊外的牧羊人報告耶穌降生的喜訊。“報佳音”的人稱(chēng)為Christmas Waits，這項活動(dòng)往往要進(jìn)行到天亮，人數越來(lái)越多，歌聲越來(lái)越大，大街小巷滿(mǎn)城盡是歌聲。
